Solar panels bolt to standing seam with seam clamps — zero roof penetrations. No holes, no flashing boots, no caulk to age out under an array you won't lift for 25 years. Racking installs faster (installers routinely quote lower labour on seam roofs), and when panels come down for service, there's nothing to re-seal. Every other roof type puts dozens of lag bolts through your weather barrier and trusts sealant for decades.
Panels last 25–30 years. An asphalt roof lasts 15–25. Put new panels on a mid-life asphalt roof and you're guaranteed to pay for full array removal and reinstallation — typically thousands of dollars — when the roof fails under it. A steel roof outlives the first array and its replacement. The right order of operations is roof first, panels second, and the maths gets better the sunnier and more expensive your electricity is — use the 50-year comparator.
Reflective "cool roof" pigments in modern PVDF finishes reflect solar energy even in dark colours (look for the finish's SRI — solar reflectance index — on the datasheet). Published field results show cooling-energy savings of 10–25%% versus dark absorptive roofing. In hot-summer regions that's a second, passive return stacked under the panels' active one.
