Frequently asked questions

Is a steel roof noisy when it rains?

Not on a properly installed residential roof. Steel installed over solid decking with underlayment and attic insulation is comparable to asphalt for rain noise. The "loud barn roof" reputation comes from panels installed over open framing with nothing underneath.

Will a metal roof attract lightning?

No. Lightning strikes the tallest object regardless of material. If anything, steel is safer in a strike: it's non-combustible and disperses energy across the roof rather than igniting like wood or asphalt.

Can steel be installed over my existing asphalt shingles?

Often yes, over one existing layer, where local building code permits — saving tear-off cost and keeping shingles out of landfill. Your contractor must verify the deck's condition and local code first. Two or more existing layers almost always require a tear-off.

How is steel roofing eco-friendly?

Three ways: steel panels can contain high recycled content (often 25–95% depending on the mill process); a 50+ year lifespan means skipping two or three asphalt replacements; and at end of life the panels are 100% recyclable — versus asphalt shingles, which mostly go to landfill. Reflective finishes also cut summer cooling energy.

Does a steel roof help with snow?

Yes — smooth steel sheds snow far better than asphalt, reducing structural load and ice damming. But that shedding must be managed: quality installers add snow guards or rails above doorways, decks, walkways, and gas meters so snow releases gradually instead of avalanching.

Will the colour fade?

All finishes weather over decades, but premium PVDF (Kynar 500®) coatings carry 40-year fade and chalk warranties and fade evenly and slowly. Budget polyester finishes fade noticeably faster — one reason two quotes for "the same colour" can differ in price.

Can I walk on a steel roof?

Yes, carefully — with soft-soled shoes, on the panel flats near supports, ideally when dry. Steel is more slippery than asphalt, especially wet or frosty. For anything beyond a quick inspection, leave it to professionals with fall protection.

Are there rebates for steel roofing in Canada?

Sometimes. Federal and provincial energy-efficiency programs change frequently — cool-roof or renovation incentives have appeared in several provinces, and some insurers discount premiums for Class 4 impact-rated roofs in hail zones. Ask your contractor and insurer what currently applies in your province.

How long does installation take?

A typical detached home takes 2–5 days: roughly a day for tear-off (if needed), and 1–4 days for panel installation depending on profile and roof complexity. Standing seam on a cut-up roofline takes longer than steel shingles on a simple gable.

What maintenance does a steel roof need?

Very little: an annual visual check, clearing debris from valleys and gutters, and keeping tree branches from rubbing panels. Exposed-fastener systems (corrugated) should have fasteners checked roughly every 10 years; hidden-fastener systems like standing seam are essentially maintenance-free.
